Unicellular red algae living in sea, estuary and on mud. A member living in foraminifer as symbiont is also known.

Coccoid cells lack distinct cell wall, but a large quantity of mucilage cover the cell. The cell possesses a single stellate chloroplast to many discoid chloroplasts. Main photosynthetic pigment (phycibilin) is different berween species, thus they show blue-greenish to reddish color (Figs 1, 2). Golgi body is associated with ER and mitochondrion. Asexual reproduction by binary fission. Sexal reproduction is unknown.
