What is the “primate genome database”?

About global COE program of Kyoto University

In order to form a strategic base for “evolution and biodiversity research” as a global COE program of Kyoto University, we are trying to integrate many factors at various levels ranging from the genome to the ecosystem. To achieve this purpose, we should change from the traditional compartmentalized research and education system to a more interdisciplinary one. In the field of primate research, Kyoto University has a rich history, especially regarding fieldwork both in Japan and overseas. Now, we would like to combine these fieldwork studies with recent genomic level research. As a model study, we analyzed the genome sequences of each of fourteen chimpanzees who live in the Primate Research Institute of Kyoto University. In this web site, we have integrated data about the physiology, behavior, and personalities of each individual with its genome data. We uploaded about 450 videos recording their behavior using the YouTube system. This web site may provide a unique opportunity for users to consider what primates, including human beings, are. We hope that everyone will enjoy the primate database.

We are planning to construct this kind of database for other primates, including wild Japanese macaques in the near future. Especially, Kyoto University has established field stations for observing wild monkeys on both Koushima and Yakushima islands. Each individual monkey shows a unique personality. Genomic analysis of these wild monkeys will provide a chance to investigate how personalities develop through the interaction of different genome sequences with their environment and society.
