Genetical studies of rice plants have developed rapidly since the beginning of this century and the information derived has accumulated as a basis for rice breeding. In these studies, many rice genetic stocks have been used effectively, and the importance of genetic resources has been widely recognized as a source of the genetic diversity used in breeding.

On May 31,1985,an international organization, Rice Genetic Cooperative (RGC) was established for enhancing the cause of rice genetics and to facilitate maintenance of genetic stocks and for holding periodic symposia of rice scientists. Rice Genetics Newsletter has also been published annually to coordinate gene symbolization and linkage mapping and exchange the latest information.

Working along the same line, a Japanese committee was organized to construct a network of genetic stock centers, which are located in the various universities and research stations in Japan. This project was promoted by the earnest efforts and cooperation among Dr.S.Iyama at the National Institute of Genetics and the committee members mentioned as follows;

T.Abe, H.Araki, Y.Futsuhara, Y.Fukuta, M.Higashi, H.Horiuchi, M.Ichii, R.Ikeda, H.Ikehashi, R.Ishikawa, N.Iwata, O.Kamijima, Y.Kamiyama, T.Katayama, T.Kato, F.Kikuchi, T.Kinoshita, H.Kitano, T.Konishi, Y.Koyama, Y.Kunihiro, M.Maekawa, K.Matsunaga, S.Miyagawa, S.Mori, H.Morishima, M.Nakagahra, H.Niizeki, K.Okuno, T.Omura, Y.Sano, T.Sasahara, H.Sasaki, H.Satoh, S.Sato, Y.I.Sato, T.Shimada, C.Shinjo, S.Shirai, S.Takami, I.Takamure, K.Takeda, T.Takita, T.Tanisaka, T.Tezuka, Y.Tomita, E.Tsuzuki, K.Wasano, T.Yabuno, H.Yamagata, M.Yamagishi and M.Yokoo.

Collected information was coordinated and processed into the form of computer database in the Genetic Informatics Laboratory, Center for Genetic Resources Information, National Institute of Genetics.

In this catalogue records of total lines or strains were classified into 10 groups according to their genetic property.

We wish to acknowledge again our indebtedness to many researchers including the above committee members,who kindly supplied us with their valuable information as listed in the Catalogue.

This work was financially supported in part by a Grant-in-Aid from the Ministry of Education, Science, Sport and Culture of Japan.
