The bacterial genome is transcribed by a single species of DNA-dependent RNA polymerase (RNAP).
The gene selectivity of RNAP is, however, modulated after interaction with two groups of the regulatory protein, the sigma factor with promoter recognition activity and the transcription factor (TF) that controls the activity and specificity of RNAP holoenzyme.
In order to understand the molecular mechanisms underlying transcription regulation of the genome as a whole, the identification of regulation targets of all sigma factors and all TFs is absolutely necessary.

Towards this ultimate purpose, we have performed ‘Genomic SELEX’ screening for identification of regulatory target promoters, genes and operons for seven sigma subunits and a total of about 300 transcription factors in the model organism Escherichia coli K-12.
To share this useful information within a variety of research communities, we developed a novel database “Transcription Profiling of Escherichia coli” (TEC) and opened to the public.
Using this TEC database, users can search either TFs that may regulate specific genes or target genes regulated by TFs of specific interest, filter the result by binding intensity and/or location, view both bar chart and heat map of TF binding, analyze consensus sequence and download raw data.
We hope it will give researchers new insights of regulation of E. coli genome transcription.
EC data will be improved by frequently incorporating new experimental results obtained by the research group as noted in the introduction (see “About” page). Future plans of the TEC database and the guideline for citation of TEC are also described in “About” page.
